Research Interests

High Temperature Polymers/Composites

The synthesis of polyimides for high temperature applications (250oC and above), the relationships of polymer structure to thermo-oxidative stability, adhesive bonding and mechanical properties are areas of interest. Areas of recent interest include the synthesis and characterization of low viscosity phenylethynyl (PE) end-capped fluorinated polyimides for high temperature applications in the aircraft and electronics industries, and for hot melt coating of optical fibers and copper wiring; PE end-capped sulfonated fluorinated polyimides as proton exchange membranes; and PE end-capped fluorinated polyimide silsesquioxane (POSS) hybrid polymers as nanostructured composite matrix materials. The synthesis of polymers from polar monomers by microwave irradiation is also an area of interest.
