Materials Processing

Facilities are available for Rapid Prototyping (RP) of 3-D objects. The principle facilities include: MKS residual gas analyzer, vacuum systems (10 torr) with scrubbing capabilities and 4 Laser processing systems equipped with:

  • Synrad continual wavelength CO2 (10.6 µm) lasers capable of a maximum output power of 50 & 25 Watts.
  • Thompson Y-150 and Quantronix continual wavelength YAG (1.064 µm) laser capable of a maximum output power of 150 & 50 Watts.
  • Continuum Surelight II pulse YAG laser with harmonic generator (1064, 532, 355, 266 µms) with a maximum output energy of 6.5, 4, 1.5 and 0.7 joules respectively.
  • Spectra Physics BeamLok 2060 continual wavelength Argon-Ion (514.5 nm) laser  capable of a maximum output power of 1.5 Watts.
  • American Isostatic Presses HIP machine with a maximum temperature range of 1700°C.
  • Thermal Technologies Inc. High Temperature Furnace with a maximum temperature of 1950°C and inert atmosphere capabilities.
  • Electrochemical deposition system
  • AIP 360 Cold Isostatic Press
  • Thermolyne 46200 High Temperature Furnace with a maximum temperature range of 1700°C.
  • Fisher Scientific Low Temperature Furnace with a maximum temperature range of 1700°C.
  • Nondestructive testing of composite materials.
  • 25 ton Carver Heated Press with a maximum temperature capability of 343°C
  • FTS Flexi-Dry Polymer Extraction system.
  • Otiphage Inc. Optical coherence tomography fracture characterization system  

The casting and solidification studies laboratory has equipment for air induction melting of charges from a few kilograms to 500 kilograms of alloys and for vacuum induction melting ferrous and superalloy charges up to 8 kilograms.
