Admission Policies

Admission to the Program requires a bachelor's or a master's degree in science, engineering, or mathematics. Applicants must submit test scores from the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). International students whose native language is not English must submit evidence of their proficiency in the English language.  The applicant may use the results from either one of two standardized tests for this purpose: the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Test System (IELTS). A minimum required TOEFL score is 550 for the paper-based, 213 for the computer-based, or 80 for the Internet-based test. If the student submit results from the IELTS, an average overall score of at least 6.5 is required.

Nearly all full-time Ph.D. students in the program receive financial aid in the form of fellowships and graduate assistantships supported by the state, industry and the federal government. These stipends are, on average, higher than those of similar programs at other universities and are based on the applicant's prior academic experience and credentials. The 9-month stipend for the 2009-2010 academic year is $19,099 for a student with a bachelor's degree and $20096 with a master's degree. The amount of the stipend normally increases on completion of the course requirements for the M.S. degree and again on passing the general examination for the Ph.D. In addition to the stipend, graduate assistantships include a tuition waiver and highly-subsidized health insurance. In general, all applicants are automatically considered for an assistantship by the program. Applications are considered on a rolling basis.
