Polymer Program Title

Professional Societies

Student chapters of major professional and scholarly societies are very active in the Institute of Materials Science. Activities include:

  • arranging tours of industrial research and processing facilities
  • sponsoring seminar speakers
  • maintaining files on job information

Materials Research Society: Founded in 1973, the Materials Research Society (MRS) is dedicated to goal-oriented basic and applied research on materials of technological importance. MRS emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to materials science and engineering and seeks to inspire cooperation among scientists from industry, academia, and government.

Society for the Advancement of Material and Processing Engineering: A student chapter of the Society for the Advancement of Material and Processing Engineering (SAMPE) was chartered in November, 1990. The technical focus of this group is primarily in the area of composites, but other areas of interest include ceramics, metals and materials for electronic applications. The students of SAMPE co-host a student night with the Connecticut professional chapter of SAMPE to showcase student research at IMS.

Society of Plastics Engineers: A student chapter of the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) was founded at IMS in 1981. Membership and activities have grown rapidly. Our students have frequently received best paper awards at national meetings of the SPE.

SFB Student Chapter: A student chapter of the Society for Biomaterials (SFB) was founded in 1997. The goal of both the local and national student chapters of the SFB is to foster student interest and to promote student research and education in biomaterials and related disciplines.
