Polymer Program SeminarSome Chemical and Physical Aspects in the Applications of Polyolefin Blends/Alloys Friday, March 9, 2007 11:00 am , IMS Room 20 Olefin polymers are the most widely used materials in the plastic industries today. To optimize their properties and processibility, blending/alloying process is often being used. This is particularly true for the toughened injection grades of polyisoprene/polyolefin elastomer blends/alloys. These are the type of materials widely used in the automobiles and appliances applications which has become more and more important due to the current day pressure of energy shortage and environmental protection problem. In this talk, both blending and in-reactor alloying process will be described. A reactor granule technology will be used to illustrate the in-reactor alloying process. Also, example of liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) and crystallization kinetics of polyolefin blends, which produces complicated morphology will be discussed. A Poly(ethylene-co-hexene)/Poly(ethylene-co-butene) (PEH/PEB) blend system will be used to describe the interplay between the LLPS and crystallization processes. The shear induced crystallization in iPP and in iPP/elastomer blends will be used to describe the shish-kebob like crystal formation with/without phase separated structures.
