3-D Solid Modeling Effort in SFF

The three dimensional solid modeling program for Solid Freeform Fabrication focuses on designing useful parts and shapes, then sectioning them into consecutive two dimensional slices for scanning. 3-D solid models are devised using IDEAS software on Silicon Graphics workstations. These models are then sectioned into thin layers using one of two formats, .STL or VRML. With either format, a path-planning program turns the sectioned layer into a coordinates file that can be interpreted by the motion control software on the system-controlling PC.
